This section has everything you need to know in order to solve the Rubik's Cube for the very first time.
I recommend starting with an introduction at the speedsolving wiki.

Methods
The most popular method by far is what has become known as the "Dan Brown" method. Dan is an internet celebrity who posted one of the first Rubik's Cube tutorials on YouTube in June of 2007. His two-part tutorial has been viewed over 30 million times.
Dan has become a person that many people in the speedsolving community love to hate. While he introduces countless people to our sport daily, he teaches what we consider to be a mediocre method. It's easy to learn, but quite different from more advanced methods, making it somewhat hard to branch out after getting used to the method he teaches. Instead, most speed cubers prefer a tutorial by YouTube user Badmephisto, among others.
I had the pleasure of meeting "Badmephisto" two years ago and he's a very friendly guy. He's a speed cuber himself and the method he teaches is easily expandable into the full Fridrich method while not being much harder to learn than Dan's.
Now that you have a bit of background knowledge, I'm going to leave it to you to decide which you would prefer to learn. If solving a Rubik's Cube is merely something to cross off your bucket list, Dan's will suffice. If the idea of one day solving the world's most famous puzzle in mere seconds intrigues you, I encourage you to learn from Badmephisto.
Both tutorials are linked below. Good luck!

Hardware
While owning a world-class speed cube certainly doesn't make you a world-class speed cuber, you still need a cube to begin with. You can pick up a regular Rubik's brand cube at a local Walmart or Target. However, it will most likely be terribly hard to turn and that's no fun to play with. I would highly recommend purchasing CRC silicone spray (which Walmart usually has) and simply spraying a bit of it inside the cube. It will do wonders, trust me. Food Grade and Heavy Duty are most commonly used.
